Intellectual Property

Intellectual property refers to the rights granted to creators and innovators to protect their original works and ideas, including copyrights, patents, trademarks, industrial designs, and geographical indications.

In Turkey, intellectual property rights are protected by various laws, such as the Law on Intellectual and Artistic Works No. 5846, the Industrial Property Law No. 6769, and the Law on Protection of Trademarks No. 556.

Copyrights protect the rights of creators to use, reproduce, publish, distribute, perform, adapt, and communicate their works to the public. Patents are granted after an examination to determine the novelty and industrial applicability of an invention. Trademarks are names, logos, or symbols used to identify a product or service. Industrial designs protect the aesthetic and visual qualities of objects. Geographical indications are signs used to indicate that a product originates from a certain geographic area.

Turkey has made significant efforts to protect and promote intellectual property rights. The Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TURKPATENT) is the institution responsible for accepting patent, trademark, and industrial design applications and providing protection for these rights in Turkey. Additionally, Turkey is a member of international intellectual property organizations, such as the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO), and works closely with these organizations.
“Intellectual property law is not about restricting creativity, it’s about protecting it.”
